Looking back at this past year, I’m in awe as to how time went by so quickly. Nevertheless, it’s time to think ahead towards the future as high school is fast approaching. Growing up in a rural community in Clarendon has its perks, however there are many challenges. Some of these challenges include young people not being able to access tertiary education or not being able to elevate in life due to financial difficulties. One of my goals in life is to elevate my family and community out of poverty. To do this I aim to maintain an overall average of above 90 % and to become an astronomer or scientist in the future. To accomplish this, it is important that I plan as to how I will go about doing this. However, there might be challenges that I will come across in order to succeed. This will require me to come up with strategies to overcome these challenges.

My first step to accomplishing these goals is to study hard for my PEP exams so I can get a good grade that will put me in the position to attend the high school of my choice. Secondly, upon starting high school my aim is to participate in all my school activities, pay keen attention in class so I can grasp what is being taught and participate in all assignments and group projects. Another step in being successful towards my goal is to make study notes and read over what is being taught as soon as possible to memorize the content. This along with constantly studying hard for my exams will guarantee that I am consistently performing well and maintaining a high average. It is also of importance that I display exemplary behavior which will give me the opportunity to be a model student for both me and my peers. Ensuring that I do well in high school will put me in the position to be accepted in university as well as giving me the opportunity to be eligible for scholarships that will greatly assist in funding my tertiary education.

Being a straight A student and an aspiring scientist will not be without its challenges. Challenges that may arise can include peer pressure, negative comments, feeling overwhelmed, burn-out, setbacks, not grasping content being taught at school and not feeling motivated. These issues can prevent me from staying focused on my goal. However, there are ways that can help to rise above these challenges. One of these ways is to talk to individuals who can help such as a guidance counselor or career experts. Another way is to make use of extra classes, seek assistance from teachers or stronger classmates or make use of online resources to gain clarity when the concept is not being understood. In addition, cutting off distractions, taking some time to rejuvenate and refocus can calm the mind and allow me to get rid of negativity and feel motivated to continue with the task at hand. As our national hero Marcus Garvey once said “If you haven’t confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won even before you have started.” I am confident that I will do well as I pursue my goals of being an A student and will fulfill my dream of being a scientist which will put me in the position to better serve my community on a whole.
